CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

2 day class                                                                                   2 ½ to 3 ½ years old

This class is geared towards teaching children social skills.  They learn to play and share with others, develop listening skills and foster a sense of self worth and self-confidence.  They listen to short stories, sing songs and learn through discovery and play.  For many children, it is a first experience away from their parents and a chance to play with others their own age and make new friends.  Children must be 2 ½ by September 1st to enter this program.  Children need NOT be potty trained to be eligible.  We do ask that they are in the toilet training process and wear a pull-up style diaper until their training is complete.

3 day classes                                                                                    3 ½ to 4 years old

This class is also geared towards enhancing social skills, but focuses more on attention span development.  The stories are longer and the concept of calendar is explored.  The children begin to identify the alphabet, write their names and practice skills such as counting and prediction.  It can either be a “middle class” for children who are moving on to the 5 day class next year, or a pre-kindergarten class. Developmentally, it is best for a child to be at least 3 ½ years old to be in this class because of the higher expectations.

5 day class                                                                                              4 to 5 years old

This class is geared specifically for children who are accustomed to the preschool environment and who are going to kindergarten next year.  It provides real continuity for them to come all 5 days and makes the transition to public school easier.  Because they attend everyday, we can focus a great deal on various skills required for kindergarten.   They learn to count, identify letters and write their names more accurately.  We concentrate on developing social and emotional skills and learning to work cooperatively within a group.  They enjoy a more in-depth calendar time, work on fine and large motor skills and develop expressive language.

My Toddler and Me                                                              15 months to 3 years old

This class is for children to attend with their parent or caregiver.  It is a two-hour class that meets one or two days per week.  The coordinator for this program interacts with the children and provides story, art projects and snack.  The children also have free play in the classroom and on the playground.  It is a perfect “first school” experience.  We have found that it provides a smoothtransition into our two-day program.  Parents enjoy the class as much as the children; it is a great way to meet new people and make friends.
